The Bharni style Madhubani painting by Teju Jha depicts Ahalya Uddharan - deliverance of Ahalya from her curse by Lord Rama. Ahalya, the most beautiful woman, is said to have been created by Lord Brahma himself and raised under sage Gautama After looking for a suitable person to marry Ahalya, Brahma finally selected Gautama to be her husband. Due to a mistake committed by Ahalya, Gautama curses her to be invisible to humans and to live on air and that, only when Vishnu descended onto Earth could she be freed from the curse. Lord Rama, the 7th incarnation of Vishnu, then under the instruction of Sage Vishwamitra, touches Ahalya who has been turned into a stone and liberates her from the curse. Ahalya shows her gratitude through her hospitality to Rama, Lakshmana and Vishwamitra.
