NUI or Needle Shibori is a Japanese version of Tie & Dye art that employs embroidery patterns to act as resist. Motifs are first embroidered using simple running stitches on the base cloth and the threads are pulled tightly to get the cloth together and create a resist. The fabric is then dyed in desired colours and dried. Once the fabric is dry the embroidery is undone, to reveal a beautiful pattern in the base colour.
This method gives greater flexibility for the designs to be created even though it is a longer process compared to traditional tie & dye bandhani technique.
