Natural disaster creates opportunities! When cyclone Thane struck Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry in 2011 the devastation was quite significant. The afforested areas too sustained heavy damage, it was estimated that some 75% of tree cover was lost. A particular tree species, Acacia auriculiformis, was among the felled trees in large quantities. Acacia is a beautiful and strong wood and it seemed a pity that it should be cut in to fire wood. The idea to create wood products was born then. The tree, locally known as Worktree, naturally became the name of what is today an established wood crafting workshop focused on providing natural wooden products to enable a more environment friendly living.
Sustainable living where we use natural and eco-friendly products for our daily needs is the need of the hour. While we unconsciously use a lot of products that use plastic and other eco un-friendly materials there are substitutes that are pleasantly easier and friendly to use and, at the same time, are in harmony with nature.
One such category that is integral to our daily living and can have a big impact on the environment is tableware and kitchen tools. Worktree has created everyday kitchen tools like a mortar and pestle, rolling pin and cutting boards, elegant wooden tableware like salad and rice bowls, plates, serving spoons, trays and utensils and all these from 100% natural wood – no composites, wood pulp or plywood.
Simple and Durable
The wood products are simple and crafted with an emphasis on good design, quality and to give the products a good finish and make them resistant we treat them with Tung oil, this oil derived from the Vernicia fordii tree is again 100% natural and totally food safe. These products need little maintenance and as they are made and treated from natural materials they are absolutely safe with no effect on the environment.
Source local, manufacture local
Being committed to the environment and local community Worktree sources wood locally from sustainable forests and all products are crafted by craftsmen from the local community. Again, a commitment to preserving the environment as against wood products that are made in factories abroad from wood sourced from unsustainable forests.
